Tuning a Piano After Moving to a new location
With spring time upon us, many households are moving to new locations. If you have a piano, there’s the consideration of when to have it tuned. If there is little difference in the humidity of the new location (for example from 42% relative humidity to 45%R.H.) the piano can be tuned right away. However, if the change in location is more extreme (i.e. from a damp basement with, 60%R.H., to an ideal location staying at 42% R.H.) it’s wise to let the piano acclimate to the new environment. Typically, three weeks after a move is a good time frame for this adjustment. This way the tuning is not as likely to shift, as the soundboard either swells or shrinks to the new level of humidity.
