Piano Tuning Atlanta Are your strings rusty?

Posted By on October 16, 2017

Pianos with surface rust on the strings can still be tuned.  Piano Tuning on older pianos with significant deterioration of the strings, pin block and/or bridges is sometimes not possible.  Generally pianos built in the 1950s or newer are in good enough condition to be tuned.  On older pianos, our Piano Tuner Technician can often tune the Piano to its current relative pitch when the risk of string failure is high due to rusty strings and other worn parts.

Piano Tuning & Sticking keys – Lilburn, GA

Posted By on June 23, 2017

At the time of the Piano Tuning, our Piano Tuner technician will check your piano for sticking keys, proper repetition, and spacing of the notes.  If you notice certain keys giving you problems, you can make a note of them in advance (for example the first D note, middle C, etc) and let the Piano Tuner know.  A couple of stuck keys can often be repaired in less than 15 minutes and is completed and included along with the Piano Tuning.

Sticking keys occur more often when the humidity is very high (resulting from swelling of the Piano action parts). Keeping the air in your home at about 42% relative humidity is optimal for maintaining your Piano.  Contact us: call or text  770-876-7340 for Piano Tuning, Piano Repairs, Piano Purchase Evaluations and Climate Control

Piano Tuning & Humidity control Norcross, GA

Posted By on May 29, 2017

We found at a Piano Tuning in Norcross, GA recently that the piano had a dehumidifier bar installed and plugged in.  (This was a vertical piano where the humidity controls are installed behind the bottom board).   It is best to also have a humidistat which works to shut off the dehumidifier bar automatically when the relative humidity gets below 42%.

Without a humidistat it is best to unplug the dehumidifier bar to prevent accelerated deterioration of the piano soundboard, wood, and felt parts resulting from the dry environment.

Older Grand Pianos in Atlanta

Posted By on March 30, 2017

Working on a 1915 Baby Grand Piano in Atlanta recently, we found that Piano Tuning was able to be completed with some minor repairs to a few of the action parts, dampers, and strings.  While some Older Grand Pianos of that era are not worth repairing, you may find that your older Grand Piano can hold up for another stable Piano Tuning.

An experienced Piano Tuner Technician can evaluate your older Grand Piano to help you decide if you should continue to keep it repaired and tuned.  Contact us (call or text) at 770-876-7340 for help with your Piano Tuning and Piano Repair needs.

Grand Piano with a loose tuning pin Decatur, GA

Posted By on February 28, 2017

While Piano Tuning near Decatur, GA on an older Yamaha Grand Piano, we found that one of the tuning pins in the bass section was loose which was preventing that particular string from holding firm.  We removed the existing tuning pin and replaced it with a new tuning pin slightly larger in diameter in order to grip the pin block more tightly and thus hold the string in place for a stable Piano Tuning.  To save you the cost of extra trip charges, these type of Piano Repairs can be done at the time of Piano Tuning as the need arises.

How often is Piano Tuning needed in Atlanta Ga?

Posted By on December 13, 2016

Piano Tuning once per year works well for many people in Atlanta. Once per year Piano Tuning at the same time of the year (the same month each year) can help to reduce pitch adjusting as the seasonal humidity fluctuation risks are minimized.  Piano teachers and other professionals have their pianos tuned more often as these instruments are practiced and played on more of a full time basis.  If you play the piano often, a six month interval may work best for you.

Also, when a Piano is tuned at regular interval, the Piano Tuner Technician can often improve the mechanical workings of the instrument (e.g. action parts lubricated, sluggish key repair) at no additional cost as these adjustments are minor when a piano is maintained on a regular basis.

Dry Air Effects on the Piano Atlanta Ga

Posted By on November 11, 2016

Dry air (low relative humidity) causes the overall pitch to flatten as the Piano soundboard shrinks and thus releases tension from the Piano strings. The detrimental long term effects of a heating vent directing warm dry air toward the Piano soundboard include reducing the useful life of a Piano significantly. Placing the Piano away from heating vents and using a deflector to direct the air away from the Piano is most helpful is maintaining a stable Piano Tuning for a maximum length of time.

A Piano Humidity control system can be installed to maintain the most desirable range of moisture in the air near the Piano and thus help to minimize the Piano pitch fluctuations commonly experienced here in Atlanta, Ga due to volatility in the relative humidity inside the home.

Grand Piano Strings with surface rust Atlanta, GA

Posted By on September 30, 2016

Surface rust begins to appear on the steel Piano strings on older pianos, typically after about 20 years in a humid climate like Atlanta, GA.  This surface rust does not materially effect the sound of the piano.  If you desire for aesthetic purposes to have the rust removed on a grand piano (for example where the strings are visible when the lid is up), there is a tool available to do this.

Cleaning rust off piano strings is best done right before Piano Tuning (as pressing down on the Piano Strings to clean them can take affect the tune).

Can my old Piano be Tuned? Atlanta, GA

Posted By on September 5, 2016

Piano Tuning on older Pianos can sometimes be performed depending on the specific condition of the instrument.  The tuning pins must be tight enough to hold the tuning, and the wood bridges must be in good enough condition to provide definitive speaking lengths in the piano strings.

Minor repairs needed on old pianos are sometimes worthwhile to do in order to keep the instrument useful a while longer.  When many broken parts are involved on these older pianos, especially lower quality brand pianos built before about 1940, replacing the Piano is often the best choice.  Call us for free guidance regarding your piano.

Where to place my Piano in my Atlanta home?

Posted By on August 5, 2016

To protect the value of your Piano and prevent wide variations in the piano going out of tune, select a place in your home away from heating vents where heat blows directly on the piano (for example: floor vents blowing up under a grand piano directly to the underside of the soundboard).  Vertical (upright) Pianos are best placed against an inside wall away from vents.  If only an outside wall is workable to place your piano, leave some space between the piano and the wall if possible.

Where sunlight can shine through windows directly on the piano, keeping curtains or blinds closed in that area will protect the piano finish and keep Piano Tuning more stable over time.

What is a Piano Tuning pitch adjustment? Atlanta, GA

Posted By on April 19, 2016

When a Piano has not been tuned for a long time, the instrument may get further out of tune from itself and from the standard A440 pitch.  Pianos get far out of tune from changes in the relative humidity in the air.  Humid air causes the soundboard to swell putting extra tension on the strings.  Dry air causes the soundboard to shrink, thus lowering the tension on the piano strings.  In either case (tension far too low, or tension far too great), a pitch adjustment tuning is the first step to getting the piano in tune.

A pitch adjustment Piano Tuning is accomplished by tuning the piano (adjusting each of the 200+ tuning pins) close enough to get the piano ready for the fine tuning.   The pitch adjustment work prepares the piano string tension for the final pass (again adjusting each of the 200+ tuning pins) to achieve a fine, clean sounding, stable tuning.

Piano Tuning and Soundboard cracks Atlanta Ga

Posted By on March 17, 2016

Cracks in your Piano Soundboard can affect the musical tone quality when a separation occurs where the ribs that are attached to the soundboard separate from the soundboard.  This gap can cause a buzzing sound on certain notes related to the proximity of where the rib separation exists.  If you hear a buzzing sound when playing your Piano, our Piano Tuner can inspect the ribs and soundboard at the time of Piano Tuning.

Soundboard cracks do not always have an adverse effect on the sound of a piano.  Call us: Piano Tuning Atlanta at 770-876-7340 to schedule piano tuning or to set up an evaluation of a used Piano you are interested in purchasing to help you prevent the potential of costly Piano Repairs.

What year was this Piano made? Atlanta, GA

Posted By on March 7, 2016

Inside the piano usually on the plate near the piano tuning pins is the unique serial number for that piano manufacturer.   Normally the piano brand name (Steinway, Knabe, Chickering, Sohmer, Mason & Hamlin, Kimball…)  is on the piano fall board which is the piece of the cabinet that covers the piano keys.

How does the piano serial number help me find the year my piano was manufactured?   Once you know the piano maker and serial number of the piano, you can look up the piano maker alphabetically in the Pierce Piano Atlas.  The year the piano was manufactured is listed in easy to read columns by serial number range.  You can obtain a Pierce Piano Atlas from Amazon.com.

Why are my piano keys stuck? Atlanta Ga

Posted By on January 25, 2016

Piano keys can be stuck for various reasons.  A foreign object could be caught between the keys, for example a coin or hair pin.  An object could have fallen into the action. (This is especially a risk with grand pianos).  Piano action parts may have become misaligned due to loosened screws or the warping of action parts themselves over time.  Piano action parts can become worn which create grooves that hinder easy access of the moving parts.

Another reason for stuck keys is the swelling of Piano parts due to humidity swings.  For example, felt bushings can swell around the pins located throughout the action and keys.

Our Piano Tuner technician can determine which of these problems is causing your piano keys to stick or become sluggish.  This is best taken care of at the time of Piano Tuning.  Call us, Piano Tuning Atlanta at 770-876-7340 to set up a time for Piano Tuning and repair of stuck keys.

Why won’t keys play after piano was moved in Atlanta?

Posted By on December 29, 2015

It’s possible that during the Piano move the action (the assembly inside the piano where the hammers are located) got off from sitting properly on the back of the keys on a vertical piano.  This happened recently on an older piano we serviced in Stone Mountain, GA.  It’s likely in this case that the piano was not handled properly when moved as the owner mentioned he did not hire a specialized piano moving company.  A Piano Tuning cannot be performed until the keys are playing properly.

On a grand piano, if the action was removed before moving the piano and reinstalled at the completion of the move, problems can occur if the action was not set into the key bed properly.  Once your Piano has been in your home after the move for 2 or more weeks to adjust to the new humidity level environment, contact us for Piano Tuning at 770-876-7340 (call or text).

Piano Tuning: Piano models to buy used in Atlanta

Posted By on November 14, 2015

Craigslist.com Atlanta continues to be a go to source for people looking to buy a used Piano at an affordable price.  If possible, look for a Piano built after 1950 as many Pianos built prior to that time have significant deterioration and cannot be tuned without costly repair work. The Yamaha U1 and U3 verticals are durable quality instruments, great to buy new or used. Piano Tuners report that these pianos are easy to work on.

Medium quality vertical Piano brands include Young Chang, Samick, Wurlitzer, Chickering.  Avoid the spinet sized vertical models, as the shorter piano string lengths produce greater inharmonicity and false beats.  Piano Tuning and action work is more difficult on spinets due to the inherent design of these instruments.

Steinway, Mason & Hamlin, Kawai, Charles Walter, Sohmer  are some of the higher quality brands if the greater investment is workable for you.   Contact Piano Tuning Atlanta 770-876-7340 (call or text) for piano evaluations, tuning, and repairs.

Piano tuning on older models in Atlanta GA

Posted By on August 4, 2015

When considering the purchase of an older piano built before 1950, be sure of the condition of the pin block, bridges, strings, soundboard, and action parts before making the investment, that you may know that a stable Piano Tuning can be performed.

People often accept a piano for free (from a church or someone moving out of a home) and pay the cost of moving the piano which can be $200 or more depending on the distance, steps, and size of the piano.  If it turns out that the piano can not be tuned, one is faced with the unpleasant choice of disposing the piano, repairing it (which is normally not worth doing on older average brand pianos), or letting it now sit in their house unplayable.

Piano Tuning has not been performed in over two years in Atlanta ?

Posted By on January 29, 2015

Humidity fluctuations are a primary cause in pianos going sharp or flat.  Generally, the longer the interval between Piano Tunings, the more likely a Piano will be further out of tune.  Here in Atlanta, GA the moist humid air we typically have from spring through autumn will swell piano soundboards causing Atlanta Pianos to go sharp.  Then, the dry air we have in the winter will cause Pianos to go flat.

When a Piano gets more than 20% off (flat or sharp) of the A440 standard pitch, a pitch adjustment Piano Tuning is required to get all the tension of the piano strings close enough to perform a fine tuning to A440.  The pitch adjustment(s) can be performed by our Piano Tuner upon the same visit as the fine tuning adjustment.  The entire Piano Tuning process will take longer when pitch adjustment(s) are needed as are over 200 tuning pins to adjust on each complete pass over the entire Piano.

Is Piano cleaning needed at time of Piano Tuning? Atlanta Ga

Posted By on January 5, 2015

With more and more people becoming sensitive to air quality due to allergies, the accumulation of dust inside a piano can become a problem for some people.  The piano key bed, soundboard (especially on a Grand Piano), behind the bottom board (on a upright piano), and the piano action may over time collect a significant amount of dust and debris.  Our Piano Tuner Technician can remove the piano cabinet pieces, the keys,  and the action to clean out the piano using a hose vacuum.

If it has been years since your last piano tuning, and you have allergies to dust or other respiratory problems,  you might consider having us clean out the piano.  Contact us at 770-876-7340 (call or text) for answers to questions regarding your piano in the Atlanta, Ga metro area.

How do I buy a used Piano? Piano Tuning Atlanta

Posted By on November 26, 2014

Craigslist Atlanta normally has abundant listings for used pianos of various makes, models, age and usage.  At www.PianoMart.com you can do advance searches to find a particular brand and size of piano by geographical area.   Beginning your used piano buying search with a low budget, look for used pianos no older than 1950 (as a general rule).  Pianos built before 1950 have a higher likelihood that a piano tuning will not be possible without significant ongoing piano repair costs.  Our piano tuner technician can evaluate a piano you are interested in potentially purchasing to determine whether or not the piano is tunable and/or needs repairs.  The piano tuner can also help you decide whether the used piano is a good value at the seller’s asking price.

Some of the quality vertical used pianos include the Yamaha U1 and Yamaha U3,  Kawai, Sohmer, Mason & Hamlin, Baldwin, and of course Steinway.  In the transient metro area of Atlanta, you can also find pianos for sale when people move out and relocate.  After you purchase your used piano and have it moved to your home, wait about 2 weeks for the piano to get used to the new humidity climate in your home.  Then contact us to schedule piano tuning with one of our piano tuner technicians at Piano Tuning Metro Atlanta 770-876-7340 (call or text).

Why do piano keys not play? Piano Tuning Atlanta

Posted By on November 3, 2014

Individual piano keys can cease to function properly for several reasons.   The piano tuner technician can diagnose the specific reason(s) at the time of your piano tuning.  Some of the reasons for stuck piano keys are as follows:  1) Individual notes may not be repeating due to the piano’s action parts rubbing against each other.  2) Debris in the piano key bed may be causing the keys to stick.  3) Moist humid air from several days of  rainy wet weather may have swelled the felt and wood parts causing some keys to stick and not repeat normally.  4) Broken parts inside the action (hammer heads, whippens, jacks, elbows, springs, bridle straps, hammer shanks) may be preventing the note from playing.

The piano tuner technician can repair the problems under #1 and #2 above at the time of your piano tuning.  Reducing the humidity level in your home over the course of 7-14 days will help to solve problem #3.  A piano damp chaser climate control system is recommended for your piano if problem #3 persists.  The piano tuner technician may need to order parts to repair problem #4 above.   As a general rule, if your piano was built prior to 1950, and action parts are breaking, it is recommended that you replace the piano (unless it is a high quality grand made by Steinway or Mason & Hamlin in which case it may be worthwhile to have it rebuilt).

Why are my piano keys sticking? Atlanta GA

Posted By on October 2, 2014

When the moisture and humidity increase during the spring and summer months in Atlanta, the felt parts in the piano action swell causing the piano key parts to sometimes rub against each other.  Drying the air out in the piano often solves this problem.  If the sticking piano keys persist, our piano tuner technician can diagnose the problem at the time of your piano tuning by removing the keys and / or the piano action.  Normally this repair will take about 10 minutes for the piano tuner to fix (without having to order parts from a piano parts supplier).  If piano action parts are broken (e.g. piano hammer shanks) the piano tuner technician may have the part on hand to  make the repair immediately at the time of piano tuning.

Have your piano ready and in tune for the holidays when your loved ones come to visit and play their favorite songs on the piano.

How does cooler weather affect Piano Tuning in Atlanta, GA?

Posted By on September 1, 2014

Colder winter air as we had last year here in Atlanta, GA does not hold as much moisture as hot and warm air.  Also, the effect of central heating (especially gas furnace heat) tends to dry out the inside air of our homes.   Our Piano soundboards have expanded during the hot humid summer months, leading to the necessity for Piano Tuning pitch adjustments to reduce the piano pitch from too sharp down to the A440 standard piano tuning pitch (the humid summer air expands the wood piano soundboard causing excess tension on the piano strings taking the piano sharp).

The colder (generally more dry air) we experience during the winter months has the reverse effect as undue tension is released from the piano strings to take the piano tuning pitch lower than desired.

How can I tell if my piano is able to hold a Piano Tuning ? Atlanta, GA

Posted By on July 18, 2014

Older pianos (in general built before 1950) have undergone significant deterioration in the wood, felt, and metal parts.  Some signs that your piano might not hold a Piano Tuning include:  1) Large cracks in the wood bridges where the speaking length of the piano strings terminate,  2) Loose tuning pins which indicate the pin block could be compromised (a piano tuner / technician can test this for you),   3)  Piano Strings that are rusted indicating a propensity for one or more strings to fail under the stress of a normal Piano Tuning pitch adjustment and fine tuning.

For more help and advice regarding your specific situation, contact Piano Tuning Atlanta by Charity 770-876-7340 (call or text) Monday through Saturday.   We provide Piano Tuning Services throughout the greater Atlanta metro area.  Enjoy your Piano this weekend!

Can my old piano be tuned for my kids to play it? Atlanta Ga

Posted By on June 12, 2014

Older pianos (generally built before 1950) often have bridges that are cracked or compromised (dried out).   Cracks in the piano bridges result in an undefined piano string speaking length as the bridge pins are no longer solidly in place.  If the cracks are not severe, the piano can often be tuned to itself a half step flat (for example) than the standard A440 piano tuning pitch and sound fine for the kids to play.

The piano pin block could also be compromised on an older piano.  Loose tuning pins can cause the piano tuning to be less stable.  Also, the strings on older pianos are often rusted and can fail.

A piano tuner / technician can evaluate the piano to determine if the instrument is tunable.  If the piano can be tuned, a piano tuning can be performed at that time.  If the piano is not tunable, the piano tuner technician can explain the situation to you and recommend a piano mover if you desire to dispose it.

Piano Tuning Atlanta: Are stuck piano keys costly to fix or repair?

Posted By on May 22, 2014

Not normally, however there are exceptions.   When stuck piano keys are difficult to repeat playing the notes, often the cause is excessive moisture in the piano from the high humidity we experience much of the time in Atlanta, GA.   The installation of a Damp Chaser humidity control system is a cost effective way to solve this problem and also protect the value of the piano over time.  The investment to install a Piano Climate control system in Atlanta, GA ranges from between $200 to  $500 total parts and labor.

Stuck keys can also result from debris that has gotten inside the piano under the keys.  A piano technician can remove the action & piano keys as needed to clean out that area and free up the stuck keys.  Normally this will take less than an hour and cost about $65.

Sometimes broken parts in the piano action prevent the note from playing.  Broken parts such as a hammer shank can be replaced individually as needed.  Some parts may need to be ordered by the piano tuner/technician from a piano supply warehouse.

The Humidistat will automatically turn the dehumidifier rod on when the humidity is excessive and turn the rod off when the air is sufficiently dry.  The system mounts inside the piano (just above the pedals on a vertical piano and under the soundboard on a grand piano).
On the dehumidify system, there is no maintenance. (Just keep the power cord plugged in year round).  On the complete system, water can easily be added to the humidifier tank as needed periodically (water can spout fits snug on the plastic filler tube). An indicator light turns on to alert you to fill the tank and the watering can holds the exact amount of water needed per filling.
The piano can be tuned a couple weeks after the system is installed.

Piano Tuning Stability & Dehumidifier Systems re: Spring Season in Atlanta, GA

Posted By on March 6, 2014

With the typical moist, damp, rainy spring weather just around the corner in Atlanta GA, the timing is right to have Damp Chaser Dehumidifier Rod(s) installed on your piano to prevent excess moisture from swelling the piano wood soundboard resulting in the piano strings going further out of tune than necessary.    The ideal relative humidity to keep a piano tuning from variance of A440 pitch is 42%.   Typical weather in Atlanta, GA in spring is more humid, resulting in pianos going further flat in the winter and further sharp in the spring.

A humidistat is also installed to regulate when the rod(s) turn on and off to insure that the piano wood and felt parts do not become too dry.  The Damp Chaser system can be installed just prior to your next piano tuning.  Contact us at 770-876-7340 (call or text) for more information to help you with your specific piano needs in the Atlanta Metro area.

Should I have a humidity control system installed on my Piano in Atlanta?

Posted By on February 13, 2014

Humidity fluctuations are the primary cause of your piano going out of tune: sharp (when humidity rises) and flat (when the air dries out).  If  the air inside in your home  (or church, school, music room) changes significantly due to: opening and closing doors & windows or constant changes in the use of air conditioning & heating for example; a Damp Chaser humidity control system might be a good investment for you.

As a general rule, if your piano is worth more than $3,000, and you want to protect your investment in the instrument long term, a Damp Chaser system is worth considering.   More consistent humidity levels preserve the wood & felts parts of the piano and reduce the pitch fluctuation extremes between every Piano Tuning.  The cold weather this winter in Atlanta has resulted in the increased use of gas furnace heat (more so than normal), excessively drying out the inside air and causing pianos to go flat.

Where can I get Grand Piano caster cups to protect my floors in Atlanta?

Posted By on January 17, 2014

Given the immense weight of a Grand Piano, caster cups may be needed to protect your quality wood floors or carpet.   Since caster cups raise the height of the grand piano off the floor, the pedal assembly is also raised up correspondingly.   The increased height of the piano pedals from the floor increases the angle of the pianist (when his/ her ankles are resting on the floor) to his / her toes (reaching up to operate the pedals).  This increased angle on the foot can be uncomfortable for the pianist and can even cause cramps.

Call us to discuss your specific grand piano and floor protection needs.  A wide assortment of caster cup wood grain finishes are available if you do need them; contact us at 770-876-7340 (call or text).  We are available to serve your Piano Tuning & Repair needs in metro Atlanta, GA at a time convenient for you.

Is it possible to tune my old piano in Atlanta?

Posted By on January 10, 2014

Old pianos manufactured prior to 1950 present certain challenges for the piano tuner / technician that require more time to adjust the pitch and fine tune the instrument.  Some of the tuning pins may need to be pounded in or replaced, and old piano strings are more likely to fail.  Three to four incremental pitch raise adjustments may be necessary to prevent excessive tension stress on the bridges.  Sometimes the cost involved in getting an old piano in good working condition is better invested in acquiring a newer piano.

One of our piano technicians can evaluate your piano to determine if it can be tuned, and if cannot be tuned, the piano technician will give you a quote on the cost of  repairs needed to make the piano tunable and recommend whether or not the piano  is worth keeping.  If a piano tuning can be performed, our technician can make the needed repairs and tune the piano that same visit.

Grandmother’s old piano in Atlanta worth keeping?

Posted By on December 2, 2013

As we visit relatives this holiday season and the memories of playing that old piano in Grandmother’s basement (that has not been played for many years), someone in the family will want to keep that piano, move it to their home, and have the piano tuned and repaired to play again.  Before investing the money to move the piano, having a professional piano tuner technician inspect and evaluate the condition of the piano action, keys, strings, soundboard, bridges, and pin block will preclude the expense of having to move the piano again (to dispose it) if the instrument is examined to be not tunable or not repairable.  Many older pianos have a multitude of needed repair issues.  Sometimes the repairs are worthwhile to have performed (especially with quality made pianos: Steinway, Baldwin, Mason & Hamlin, Sohmer, etc.), yet oftentimes a more complete piano rebuilding is required, the cost of which can render the piano worthless in its present condition.

When you sit down to play “Amazing Grace” and other songs on the piano, listen to hear if all the notes sound equally out of tune, or if there are certain notes that sound way, way off.  Then call us for an evaluation that we can schedule at a time convenient for you.

God bless you as you enjoy the season.  Someone recently reminded me of the amazing love of God to send his only begotten son into to world to die for sinners. Perhaps your family Bible has not been read in as many years as that old piano has not been played.  We encourage you to read the Bible today, and seek the Lord with all your heart.

What Piano Repairs are needed when Tuning older Pianos in Atlanta?

Posted By on October 9, 2013

Older pianos that have not been tuned in years will sometimes require more than 1 pitch adjustment to get the piano string tension close enough in tune to perform a stable fine Piano Tuning at the A440 pitch. If the bridges are hair line cracked and/or the tuning pins are more loose than optimal, our Piano Tuner can pitch adjust the Piano to itself without undue string tension adjustment stress on these older fragile parts.

Occassionally, one or more of these repairs may also be needed on older pianos: 1) Piano keys may need to be leveled, 2) Action felt and or bushings may need to be replaced, 3) The key bed may need to be cleaned out (area under the keys that can collect debris and hinder the piano keys from playing properly), 4) The Piano Action may need to be lubricated and the moving parts regulated.

Contact us, Piano Tuning Atlanta by Charity K. 770-876-7340 (call or text) to have your piano tuned once per year to minimize the chance of needing several repairs at once.

Funny things are discovered Piano Tuning in Atlanta

Funny and Surprising Things Found Inside Pianos

Sometimes  piano owners wonder if their there are any treasures to be found inside their old pianos that they’ve recently acquired.  In all the many years I’ve worked in pianos, starting when I was 12 years old, I don’t remember finding anything that could be considered a treasure of any sort.  However, I have found many amusing things.

Once, as I was called for a repair to get the keys to play properly, I discovered that underneath them was a collection of tightly packed peanuts.  These weren’t the kind people use for packaging, but  real peanuts!  They were packed so securely in there, that it took me about a half our, using a bit of force, to be able to unwedge them all!  Can you imagine the diligent rodent bringing up peanut after peanut, using his little body to stuff and squeeze “his” territory, until his “barns” were filled with plenty.   It reminds me of the parable in Luke 12:20, where the man stored his treasures in the wrong location.

How long does it take to Tune a Piano? Atlanta, GA

Posted By on September 10, 2013

It depends on the quality, age, condition of the Piano, the attention to detail of the Piano Tuner, and thus how many Piano Tuning / Pitch Adjustments are needed to provide a stable Piano Tuning. If your piano is more than 7% flat or sharp, pitch adjusting will be required. Older pianos for example can require two or more Piano Tuning pitch adjustments to minimize sudden stress on the bridge pins and piano strings. When this is the case, a complete Piano Tuning with Pitch Adjustments may take two to three and a half hours to achieve a stable A440 standard pitch tuning.

On the other hand, a fairly new high quality large grand (or longer string vertical piano) that is within a few cents of the standard pitch on the entire scale, may take 2 hours for a complete Piano Tuning.
