Pitch Adjustment -Why is it sometimes needed with a piano tuning?

Pitch Adjustment Described:

Pitch Adjustment, Pitch Raise, or Pre-tensioning  are similar terms. When the piano strings are too sharp or too flat to hold a piano tuning (in only one piano tuning pass) a  pitch adjustment is needed first.  This will position the strings close enough in tune, so the fine tuning can be performed, to set the tuning solidly in place.  The extra work needed to tune a piano in this condition is significant, since the 200+ tuning pins on the instrument need to be adjusted a second time. You can help avoid the additional cost and work required by the piano tuner to perform a pitch adjustment by having your piano tuned regularly, and by protecting your piano from huge humidity swings throughout the seasons.
